Is the transmission error electrical or mechanical? Trying to decide if replacement is needed.

Ford F-150 V6 XLT 2000. Transmission will not engage in 3rd gear or higher, it just move into neutral and lets the engine rev high and not engage until lower speed, then 2nd re-engages. Overdrive "OFF" works when it should be in 3rd gear, so getting around is still ok. I have heard that some control sensors to the PCM can cause similar issues. I don't want to replace the transmission only to find it was a sensor error.

Check fluid to make sure it's full then have a trans guy look at it. Sounds as if there is a seal/clutch problem and is in limp mode.

Thanks hMac300. I will check the fluid level, and then ask a transmission tech. Sounds like it is not a "seen before" electrical issue.
