Check the hermonic balancer is not spinning inside its self. The belts still turn. To check turn engine off and trun to roll the engine over by just rolling the water pump pully. The engine fan should also turn at this time. If not look at the hermonic balancer. You will see that the outside is turning but the inside is not.

Just wondered if smitty84942 ever found out what the problem was with his tracker. Mine is doing the exact same thing. All happened at once.(Overheat, then lost all power and then went to fast idle. The battery terminals were corroded, so I cleaned them and replaced the battery as well as a suspect idler pulley. Never had any issues with the vehicle, then all at once. Seems a bit suspect that it has exactly the same symptoms as his tracker. It's still overheating and the battery drains. Would a power loss contribute to the overheating? Or could this be corrosion where the wires connect to the fuse box on the fender?

Engine Cooling problem
1999 Chevy Tracker 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 110000 miles

Consumes about 3 quarts of coolant every 1000 miles. No outside leaks can be found - checked on clean pavement with engine on and off. Oil appears normall, I can't see anything that looks like water or coolant. So, where is it going? If ouy the exhaust, where's the probable leak? Check engiine light is on - Advance Auto diagnostic reads "EGR valve malfunction". I don't know if the prblems are related, but you already told me how to address the egr problem, but it's low on the engine and I haven't found a friend with lift yet. Any help with the coolant problem will be much appreiated. Thanks, Mallon500. PS - the vehicle runs fine. Driving it, you wouldn't think there's any problem.

Hi there, thank you for the donation.

There is only 2 places it can go, on the ground our through the engine, you will have to go get a cooling system pressure test done hot, this will prove any external leaks, and you can have a Co head check done, this will identify any exhaust gasses in the cooling system, which will indicate an internal problem, do these checks first.

I have a 2002 Chevy Tracker that overheated and cracked the plastic top to the radiator. I replaced the radiator and it still overheated. I noticed the fan belt was missing and put a new one on. Car still overheated. I changed the thermostat, water pump, serpentine belt, idler pulley and radiator cap. Car still overheated. I took it to the local shop and they changed the fan. Still overheated. They told me the harmonic balancer was bad and they couldn't order a new one because GM is on strike. I ordered one online and took it to them. They replaced it after great effort getting the old one off. They said it was seized on. Now the car runs great and does not overheat.

Thank you so much for mentioning the harmonic balancer. This has saved me a ton of time and work. I had the same symptoms as others plus my power steering was getting stiff. Was getting ready to replace the rack when it started overheating. Checked my balancer and it is shot. Lucky me for checking this site.
Thanks, Ferg
