The transmision in our 2000 Bonnieville shifts fine most of the time, but occasionally it shifts real solid and sometimes you can hear a different whining noise, it only has 49,000 miles on it. Any ideas of whats wrong? :

Well, first I would give a dose of Milk of Magnesia or
Ex-lax  Then I would think about maybe changing the filter and giving it a new batch of fluid. Probably be a good idea to check out the modulator valve as the inconsistency in hard shifts may be due to weak valve and combination of dirty filter. Doesn't sound like anything real serious but seems due for some regular maintanance. Sorry but couldn't let your opening lines go!

Just to add to this one on those transmissions when they shift hard its usually caused by a bad pressure control solenoid. Do you have a codes in the computer?Your just barely up for your first transmission service which is 50,000 miles so I kinda doubt changing the fluid is going to fix the hard shift issue. Also if it ends up needing the pressure control solenoid you will have drain and replace the fluid again you would have to have a pressure test done on the transmission when its acting up to say for sure you have a bad solenoid. If you let it go too long like thay you will do internal damage to the transmission. You can try to change the fluid to correct the issue your about mileage wise ready for a change. But usually from what I have seen unless your transmission filter is restricted etc then its not going to correct the issue. Also drain your transmission fluid thru a rag to see if there is any metal in the fluid.
