We replaced the valves on the car listed above it is a T4. I want to know the position of number one and four pistons when the notch on crank shaft lined up between cam shafts. The engine turns nicely, but it does not start. The car has been parked for five months.

please help!

Both pistons are at the top of there stroke. Check the timing belt/chain it may be out of time there. Also, piston number should be at TDC when mark on crank is lined up, so it may be on number four. then recheck your work.

If its all okay check out this guide for why it wont start.

Please let us know what you find.

They are one and the same once the piston is at the top it can be either.

How do I set the timing on the cams after removing the sprockets from the cams? Also, does number one cylinder have to be top dead center to get car in timing?

Replaced the head from a over heat.

Hello,

Yes the engine does need to be on TDC. Here is a diagram that shows the camshaft timing marks.

Please let me know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Best, Ken

How do I line up the exhaust camshaft sproket to the camshaft? I removed the camshaft sproket while taking the valve cover off. There is no lineup pins on the camshaft. I just need to know how to line it up. It is a 2000 Volvo S40 1.9 Turbo.

Thanks!

Look on the teeth of the cam sprocket for grooves in the center of the teeth. Then there should be markings on the timing cover. Line these up on both sprockets.

The only way to do this is with a special tool. See picture.

Problem is I do not know the position of the engine when you dismantled it. You cannot rotate the cams independently of the crank, if you do turn the cam you must do very carefully as to much pressure on a valve touching a piston will cause serious damage. Do you know the relevant cam, crank positions before dis-assembly?

Did the belt brake or was it removed with out first aligning the timing marks? See picture for alignment points. If it broke you will have bent valves.
