My girl friend has a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, 2.7 liter V-6, with approximately 95K miles. About 18 months ago it began to intermittently shut off when slowing to stop. Normally it would immediately restart; however, occasionally it could take 10 to 15 minutes. About 10 days ago it stopped and would not restart. The mechanic working on it, the next morning, had no trouble starting the car. His diagnostics showed numerous problems and so far has changed: the Cooling Fan Motor, Crankshaft Sensor, Camshaft Sensor, Ignition Coil, and the Engine Control Module.

$1800 later, she has it back and now it shuts off, when slowing, with greater frequency than before it was repaired. Additionally, the Check Engine Light comes on and will remain on through 3 or 4 complete cycles (start, run, and shutdown) and intermittently will idle quite roughly. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

My car shuts off on occasion also. It has done it 3 times. I have had mechanics looking at several of the same fixes you have done. I have not taken a step forward because I am not sure nor is my mechanic, what the problem is. It usually dies when coming to a stop. One of the mechanics said it could be a fuel pump inside the tank not pushing enough pressure hence causing the engine to die. Does your cars trany slip? If so the engine may not be getting enough gas causing down shifts and engine slow downs. I have no idea what the problem is nor does my mechanic. If you do get the fuel pump replaced please let me know if that fixes it. Or if you find a fix let me know. Also in the 2.7L like yours I have heard that Engine sludge causes serious grief with those engines(2.7L).

2002 Intrepid 3.5, intermittently has a rough idle. Somtimes when coming to a stop. Sometimes right after the first start of the day. It does not stall, does not have a hard time starting, runs great almost all the time. Once or twice a week when I come to a stop, I will get a rough idle. Check engine light is on. After a couple days the engine light will turn off. Next time I get a rough idle, it will come back on.

Check engine light coming On or has flashed-You need have the computer scan for code/s, there's a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to come on. This is your starting point to finding out the problem.
