It started acting like fuel filter was clogged sluggish got to where it would die when stopped and more frequently. Changed fuel filter try to start and could not keep started so got fuel pump and it sounds like it wants to start but still won't turn over it also will backfire when trying to start. Don't know what to check next any suggestions?

This does sound like a fuel issue, so we need to confirm this by checking fuel pressure. However, here is a guide that will help with getting us started on this issue.

Once we run through the basics we need to find out what we have and don't have to get this engine to start. We need to start with fuel pressure.

Next, we need to pull a plug and hold it against the block and make sure we have spark.

This may have been a fuel pump issue but at this point the plugs are fouled due to excessive cranking. So, you may need to replace the plugs if the pressure is correct and then see if the engine starts.

Please run through this info and let us know what questions you have.
