I have a 98 honda accord, it starts for couple seconds then dies. if you press on the gas pedal, it stays on until you release it. what can cause that?
Thank you.

The following is what I did when faced with these symptoms last week. To make sure, it would be best to go to autozone or an autoparts store where they can do the following for FREE: Run a diagnostics test. They will bring a diagnostics machine and plug it to a wire located around where your left knee would be if sitting in the driver seat. It will read and give a code, for example, P0108 was the code I received (faulty map sensor). If this is the issue then replace the map sensor. It is located in the upper left hand corner when you have your hood up and are facing the vehicle. Find a map sensor for a 1998 Honda Accord, and replace it, unplug the old map sensor from the grey switch, unscrew the screws, screw in the new map sensor, and plug the switch back in. I have attached what the map sensor looks like, the original is on the right, the replacement is on the left. I recommend doing this procedure yourself and you will only pay for the part, as a mechanic gave me a quote of 110$ to fix it, when you can find the part yourself for around 70$ (I'm in Brooklyn, NY).

The idling circuit is not functioning correctly and the MAP sensor as scr8souf indicated can be the cause. If the Check Engine Light is not indicating, then you need to check the thrpottle body and IAC for clogging due to accumulation of dirt.

Cleaning the IAC and throttle body and readjusting the idle speed would usually solve the problem.
