1998 Ford Contour timing

It has knock, runs OK but knocks once in a while. Sounds like it may be coming from the timing chain. It is a four cylinder car. Runs good on the road knock happens when it comes to a stop. Car stays running. We don't drive it because we don't want to risk it messing something else up. Their is no noticeable change in power. All Other guages seem to be stable. The check engine light has not come on.

A knock can come from a lot of different things. Does it sounds like it comes from the engine area? Does it only do it when you are at an idle? Has the oil light ever come on when you hear it? Is the motor oil clean and full?

Yes it sounds like it is coming from the engine, the oil is clean and full. It only does it at idle unless you just can't hear it while your driving. No the engine oil light has never come on when we hear it.
