The odometer and speedometer did not work from last year. I have new wiring and speedometer sensor, lasted through the winter. Last week on a rainy night both odometer and speedometer after a few days of sunny weather, they worked until a few days ago. It rained and did not work again. What is the problem here? First time it rained, the gears were slipping a bit, but the second time the gears worked perfectly. I can go on to the highway and no gear slipping.

This may be a connection problem, try putting dielectric grease at transmission connection and speed sensor connection. Otherwise look for a wiring issue due to the wet weather.

Hello,

Your problem sounds more like the vehicle speed sensor has gone out. Here is a wiring diagram to help you do some testing for power at the cluster and a diagram of the vehicle speed sensor location.

and

Check the wiring at the sensor as well.

Please run some tests and get back to us so we can continue helping you.

Cheers, Ken

The speedometer on this Rav has stopped working correctly. It will stay on 0 then go all the way up to 80, then down to 20 MPH and so on. Mainly it stays on 0. I was going about 60 on the freeway when this started. The speedometer worked fine until this started.
Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what happened with this. I do have a meter to test with, so what's next?
I've noticed that the speedometer shows a speed when the car is stopped. It will go up and down as you sit, say at a stop light.

Computer problem
1997 Toyota Rav4 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 114000 miles

My son's 1997 Rav4 speedometer quit working. The odometer and cruise control still work. The speedometer will work up to about 30 mph then it goes the other way the faster you go. At 60 mph it reads 0 MPH. You can set the cruise at any speed and it stays at that speed. Can I assume that the speed sensor is still working and the speedometer is at fault? I aks because I am planning on buying a new instrament cluster and don't want to waist money if it can be something else at fault.

My vehicle has a five speed manual with Sidewinder security which has been disabled. Over the past three years the speedometer works then stops. Odometer works fine. Now it will not pass inspection. Have had it to two different shops one of which was Toyota dealership. They can not the find problem. They have checked senors, changed and have tried new speedometer. Still does not work after almost $2,200.00. Now they are saying they think need to go into engine/transmission to see if it is connected at a cost of another $2,000.00. Any idea to problem that does not require this?

First was the security hooked into one of the dash wires? And when it was disabled were they disconnected. Also if odometer works and speedometer does not then I would have to think it is a speedometer problem. Not transmission. If it were me I would take to a speedometer repair shop as a dealer will only pull the dash out and send it there if they do that. The only other thing I can think of is the gear on transmission is slipping or has a broken clip holding it.
