My 97 4Runner died out while turning @ a street light and my wheel locked. When trying to re start it, thick clouds of white smoke from the tail pipe filled the neighborhood.

I JUST had my hose replaced less than 3 weeks ago when my truck 1st died out. It then too had lots of smoke from the back, died out, but also had smoke coming from under the hood.

Could it be the same problem or something worse?

THANK YOU!

Hello,

So, when the engine stalled, was it overheating? Were you getting any smoke before it stopped?

There could be a few different reasons why this stalled.
One of the possibilities is a faulty crankshaft position sensor.
The crank sensor sends data of the engine revolution to the ECM. Over time heat and vibration from the engine can cause it to lose its internal calibration. This will cause the sensor to malfunction and that can trigger the engine shutdown.

The crank sensor can be tested by checking for internal resistance.

I have attached the replacement and the test procedure below.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.
