recently my temp light went on. As soon as I added water I noticed a slow drip close towards the back of engine.

You need to pressure test the system to see where the leak is coming from. Most parts stores will lend you a pressure pump for the cooling system. All you do is when the vehicle is cold, remove the radiator cap and the pump will attach to it. Pressureize it and then check for leaks. It could be a hose, head gasket...
