Can a defective engine distributer cause car to shut off?
After racing off my engine, I will stop and then I would press the X again, and the engine would die down and cut off.

Yes, the distributor is one of the main components for the engine to run but if you are able to restart, that should not be the cause.
Check for trouble codes first.
What is the idling speed?
