I have a 1996 ford ranger, when I turn the heater on it feels like the engine is going to die. While driving it today it started to sound like an airplane. What is wrong with my truck?

The only thing I can think of that would place a draw on the engine is if the alt is getting a heavy load placed on it from the blower motor. Does the alt gauge drop when you turn it on?
