BUICK ROADMASTER GAS PROBLEM

1996 Buick Roadmaster • 174,000 miles

I almost ran out of gas a couple weeks ago while driving up a hill and barely made it to the gas station. I put gas in it and car was still sputtering, but I figured that because I allowed my gas to get so low, that maybe the gunk from the bottom of the tank possible caused a blockage in the fuel injectors. My car hasn't gotten any better, in fact, now it's making a "chirping" sound and sputters when I push on the gas to go and occassionally, while driving between 35-50 mph, it will sputter and feel like it's about to conk out. Just rebuilt the transmission about a year and a half ago. I'm a single mom and haven't found an inexpensive, honest and reliable mechanic in the area I recently moved to. This car is already sooo expensive when it comes to repairs, but it's my only mode of transportation and the only way to be able to get my disabled son and his wheelchair (along with my 3 little ones) to and from doctors and therapy appointments, etc. HELP!

If you think it is a fuel issue, use a gage and check fuel pressure. How long since tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand autostores used to check codes for free. Tell them the mil lamp has been on, or they won't check it.
