I had a mechanic locate the oil leaking from my car. He showed the leak to me which is coming from the oil pan that is rusting out. Due to the old age of the car the bolts are rusted which complicates the repair work. They might have to drill to get the old bolts off the oil pain. I was told the labor might be between four to six hours and the repair cost could range from $700 to $900. Is this a fair price and does it take this long to replace the oil pan?

To have a shop do it its 1.5hrs 124.50 labor plus about 40 in parts. As far as drilling out bolts etc that would be extra but that sounds like high estimate.

I was very surprised by your answer that to replace the oil pan on my 1995 Geo Prizm would only take approximately 2 hours. Is it a difficult repair job as I was told by the mechanic? He made it seem that it would take at least 4 hours to do the job. Or perhaps he really doesn't have any interest in doing the work. He did say to me that he understood why the dealership (who serviced my car) didn't tell me about the problem because the work is so labor intensive.

Your comments would be appreciated.

From what I see with some air tools it isn't a big job sounds like he didn't want to deal with the rusted bolts.
