I bought this old suv for my 16 year old son a few weeks ago and realize that him being an inexperienced driver is part of the problem. He drove a different manual vehicle for 6 months (with no problems) so I thought he had shifting figured out. Anyway, when I test drove the Trooper, it shifted fine other than reverse being a little stiff. Now (after only a few weeks) all the gears are past stiff and almost at a "force" level to get in gear and fifth gear actually grinds. My question is since it has so many miles is it just time for a clutch change or do I have transmission issues?

Unless abused, manual transmissions rarely go bad. Tell me this. With the engine off, can you shift the gears easily? Also, is the hydraulic fluid in the clutch master cylinder full?

I forgot to mention that. Yes, it shifts smoothly when the engine is off. The reservoir is full as well. Thank you for the response!

I honestly don't think it's the trans. My guess is that the slave or MC is going bad and releasing the clutch fully.
