I have a 1993 Saturn SL2, with a 1.9 litre twin cam engine and automatic transmission. The car has about 75,000 miles. The engine is currently consuming oil at the rate of 1 litre every 600 miles. I understand that this could be because of the worn out piston rings which may explain the drop in engine oil preassure of about 10%. The car is supposed to use 5W30. I was told that I could use a different engine oil grade to reduce the consumption of oil. I would like to know which grade would be recommended in this case. Also, I was adviced to replace the spark plugs with ones that do not have platinum tips to avoid spark plug fouling. I have done this already by using NKG V power spark plugs and I have noticed a dramatic improvement. Please let me know if it is a good idea to use engine oil additive to prevent oil consumption.
Thank you for your help.

Saturn allows 1qt of oil every 2,000 miles to be burned on that car. So that is pretty high oil useage always use ngk non platnuim plugs or you will get oil and carbon fouling.I would check the pcv make sure it isn't sludged up or have a weak spring in it. What kind of weather do you have where you live?Let me know so I can give you some advice on what to put in your engine help with the oil consuption.

If its real hot right now and your burning that kind of oil I would go with a 10w 40 three qts and 1qt of lucas organic oil stabilzer thats what I use in my 1999 saturn in the hot summer monthes it helps with oil consumption I have. Mines not as bad as yours though. Also check your pcv like I suggested.

Thank you for your response. I just finished checking the pcv valve and I found oil sludge around it. Also, the spring was very weak. It is the original one. I will be replacing it on Monday and I will let you know what happens. Thank you once again.

Make sure you get a factory pcv on that car because a lot of thr aftermarket ones are the wrong ones and will give you trouble with oil consuption.
