How do you change a fuel pump

A mechanic says, my car needs the fuel pump replaced, The problem started when my car wouldn't start and turn over after work. So I called a tow truck and as the tow truck showed up, an hour later my car decides to start up when I try it one more time. A day later it worked fine in the morning, but died later that day in the middle of an intersection as I was crossing it. How can I be sure the mechanic really changed out the fuel pump in my car and not just a fuse. It cost 700 dollars for the work on the car, and nothing was moved in the trunk of my car. Don't you have to remove the spare tire in the trunk to get to the fuel pump? Thank you, for your help.

Hello,

It sounds like you might have a bad fuel pump. When the car doesn't start see if you have fuel pressure.

Here will give you an idea of how to change the pump out.

Check out the diagrams (Below)

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

I'm going to replace my fuel pump. I am aware that the pump is in the tank. Is there an access hole or do I need to cut one. If cutting one is the answer, is it better to go in from the trunk or under the back seat? And where do I cut so I can keep the body repairs to a minimum? Thank you for your time, Mike

You have to drop tank to remove fuel pump.

DO NOT CUT ANY HOLES IN BODY TO ACCESS FUEL PUMP FROM ABOVE.

This can cause many problems including the possibility of cutting into the tank and causing a fire/explosion.

Use car repair link in this thread or get a Haynes manual. It will give detailed instructions, read it first, you may deciede you would be better off having it done at a garage.

Make sure it is the fuel pump, check fuses and FP relay first

Does the fuel tank have to be removed from the car in order to replace the fuel pump or can this be done through the trunk?

Depends on labor, but labor is 2 hours and the part is $450.

So if labor is $75 an hour, you would be looking at $600.

This part is the complete pump assy. Including gauge sender.

There is no inertia switch (shut off switch). Check the fuel pump relay, in the underhood fuse block.

Thanks for your quick reply
i have checked all fuses and relays relating to the fuel system I just don't want to take it to the shop and pay a arm and leg to find out it was something I can do for half the price
how much pressure should spray out fuel from the line coming from the tank it is disconnected from the filter
should it be high because it was just barely running out

With ignition switch to the RUN position, engine off, the pressure should be 50 - 60 psi but will only last for a couple of seconds without using a scan tool to enable the fuel pump relay.

Ok then I must be the pump because it did come out with a full stream but maybe no more than 10-15 psi maybe but after a couple of times then nothing came out from the fuel line from the tank and the pump made no noise does this sound like a fuel pump problem
thanks in advance you have been very helpful

Well, we got a bill from our trusted mechanic for $830. He has never ripped us off. Not a dealer, but an independent shop. Not sure if the part oem, but he said the part was $500 and labor and tax about $330. Thanks!
