1993 Geo Prizm Repair Question

I have a 1993 Geo Prizm, it shifts from 1,2,5 great, when going into 3rd or 4th it will not engage and grinds out. If you are at a low enough RPM it will go into either gear but is a real struggle to get in there, could this be as simple as shift linkage?
Or do you think it may need a whole new transmission

it needs a syncroniser in the trans. to replace it means total tear down. it may be more cost effective to look for a good used trans. get a shop to check and confirm.
