Won't start

Car has 160000 miles, timing belt was replaced @ 110000 miles, replaced cap & rotor plugs & wires shotly after i bought it @ 147000 miles, i was driving home on the highway 65mph and the tach jumped from 2700 rpm to 3200 rpm for an instant then ran fine then about 1/2 mile down the road the car shut off. got the car home, it started for about 30 seconds then would not start. the next day it started for about 2 minutes then stalled. i thought it was the fuel pump, replaced it and the filter mounted on the firewall. i checked to see if i was getting fuel it and it is. still the car will not start. could this be electrical or something else common for these cars?
