Are you sure the points are set properly? Is the distributor is turning? Are you sure the coil is good?

Coil rotor bug points setup dist cap all new. When I hook power up to the coil like it is suppose to be the power just dissapears and doesn't return. The guy I got car from has done some ghetto splicing in the engine wiring harness and off the ignition switch and the headlight switch. I think that it has a wiring short somewhere in the ghetto wiring I think it has to do with almost 4 wires spliced from main engine harness to the alternator I had warning lights come on in instrument panel when I was de-taping the cluster

SORTA WANTED VOLTS, NOT OHMS

KEY OFF- REMOVE DISTRIBUTOR CAP

LOOK AT POINT GAP

IS IT OPEN OR CLOSED?

LETS GET IT OPEN

ROTATE CRANK BY HAND (WRENCH OR SOCKET) UNTIL THE POINTS ARE OPEN

TURN KEY TO "ON"

TAKE VOLTAGE READING AT POS SIDE OF COIL

EVER MESS WITH POINTS BEFORE?

DO YOU HATE THE POINT SYSTEM?

I HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD, INEXPENSIVE BY MY STANDARDS, DARN RELIABLE, EZ TO HOOK UP, NO EXTRA WIRING TO RUN, AVAILABLE ONLINE

WE'LL KEEP TRYING THIS WAY, UNLESS YOU WANNA GO THE OTHER ROUTE

YOU "MAY" HAVE A RESISTANCE WIRE (THE WIRE ITSELF)

BUT BACK DURING THE HAY-DAYs OF RIGS LIKE OURS

THEY SOMETIMES USED A "BALLAST RESISTOR" ON A REGULAR WIRE TO DROP THE VOLTAGE TO THE COIL

IF YOU HAVE ONE, FOLLOW THAT WIRE!

THIS IS A PIC OF A "TYPICAL" BALLAST RESISTOR (MINE, ON BOTH OF MY JEEPS)

YOU MIGHT EVEN LOOK AT ONLINE AUTO PARTS STORES, STICK IN YOUR VEHICLE INFO, SEARCH FOR "BALLAST RESISTOR"----YOURS COULD LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT

IT COULD BE ANYWHERE ON YOUR RIG, THE FIREWALL SEEMED TO BE THE IDEAL PLACE ON MANY

IN THE LINK BELOW, A RESISTANCE WIRE IS UNNEEDED, LOOK "MY ANSWER" OVER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST, JUST SHARING SOME GOOD INFO!

SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE GROUNDED

IN THE DISTRIBUTOR

YOU ARE ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE GROUNDED WHEN THE POINTS TOUCH EACH OTHER

WHEN I GOT MY WILLYS JEEP READY TO RUN BACK IN 1991, I HAD THE SAME SYMPTOMS

EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT, BUT NO FIRE

TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, I HAD SIX FRIENDS OVER TO WATCH HIM BUST OFF ON THIS "GLORIOUS DAY"

I RAN THRU EVERYTHING FOR HOURS, WAS LAUGHED AT, AND THEY SLOWLY DISSIPATED AND WENT HOME.

ONE BUDDY HUNG WITH ME, I ISOLATED IT TO THE DISTRIBUTOR, AND KEPT SAYING, "NOT ONLY WAS IT 45 YEARS OLD, BUT IT HAD TO BE DEFECTIVE TOO"

***** NOT *****

I WAS NOT REAL FAMILIAR WITH POINTS, SO WE SAT DOWN AND METHODICALLY TRACED THE PATH THAT THE ELECTRICITY RAN THRU IT

****** I HAD RE-INSTALLED EVERYTHING IN IT, EXACTLY AS I HAD REMOVED THE OLD STUFF ******

NO WAY I HAD DONE IT WRONG!

WE SAW NOTHING MESSED UP

***** THEN *****

WE SAW WHY THE PREVIOUS OWNER (SOME 20 YEARS BEFORE) HAD ABANDONED IT IN A FIELD BEHIND HIS HOUSE

THE BOLT AND NUT THAT HOLDS THE TWO STRAPS OF THE POINTS (SILVER AND BRASS) ONTO THE DISTRIBUTOR MUST HAVE GOTTEN LOST, AND HE REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER ONE

I REPLACED IT THE SAME WAY TOO!

IT WAS TOO LONG AND WAS BARELY TOUCHING THE INSIDE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR OUTER HOUSING

CONSTANT GROUND!

I GROUND THE BOLT OFF, RE-INSTALLED IT, STUCK MR. DISTRIBUTOR CAP ON

FIRED OFF ON THE FIRST REVOLUTION!

EIGHT HOURS OF THAT "KNOT IN MY STOMACH"/ FIXED IN TWO MINUTES!

THIS MAY NOT BE YOUR PROBLEM, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IS TOUCHING GROUND SOME HOW IN THERE

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO RUN A CONTINUITY TEST?

YOU DISCONNECT THE DISTRIBUTOR, RUN IT THRU THE OUTER ELECTRICAL CONNECTION / THE OTHER END OF YOUR VOLTMETER LEADS TO THE BODY OF THE DISTRIBUTOR

WITH THE DISTRIBUTOR ROTATING, THE VOLTMETER (SET ON OHMS) SHOULD TURN OFF AND ON, IF ITS GROUNDED CONSTANTLY, IT WILL REMAIN ON, THAT IS "SHOW CONTINUITY ALL THE TIME" (THIS WAS A HILLBILLY EZ EXPLANATION)

IF NO

I CAN SHOW YOU

I MADE PICS FOR THAT TOO

I don't know how to do continuity test but sounds straight forward I will try that too. An automatic selection voltage meter should work right?

I MADE THE VOLTMETER PICS A LONG WHILE BACK, I DON'T EXPLAIN THINGS WELL SOMETIMES

CONTINUITY MEANS "THE JUICE IS MAKING A LOOP AND RETURNING TO THE METER" (WHILE POINTS ARE CLOSED) (WHICH IS GOOD!)

NO CONTINUITY IS "JUICE AIN'T MAKING THE LOOP" (WHEN POINTS ARE OPEN) (WHICH IS GOOD!)

CONSTANT CONTINUITY WHILE OPEN OR CLOSED (IS NOT GOOD!) LOOK FOR THE PROBLEM, IT MIGHT BE THAT THE "CORK LOOKING" PAPER UNDER A PART IS GONE OR NO LONGER ISOLATING THE PART FROM THE PLATE OR BODY

LET ME KNOW IF YOU UNDERSTAND

INCREDAWONDERFUL!

RUBBER WON'T LAST FOREVER

RADIO SHACK MAY HAVE THE CORRECT KINDA GASKET PAPER

OT NEXT TIME YOU SEE A SHELLED OUT OLD RADIO OR TV, BUST INTO 'EM AND YOU MIGHT FIND THE CORRECT MATERIAL IN IT

IS IT KICKIN' BUT NOW?

SO WERE MY JEEP STORIES TOO LONG AND BORING?

DID YOU "SPOT IT", OR DID THE CONTINUITY TESTS FIND IT?

SEND US A PIC OF YOUR RIG, WE LIKE TO SEE THE END RESULTS, OR THE BEGINNINGS OF YOURS

ONLY FAIR, YOU SAW A PIC OF MY $100 PRIZE, BEFORE I LOADED IT UP AND BROUGHT IT HOME TO MEET ALL OF THE LAUGHTER

I CAN LINK YOU TO ANOTHER POST WITH "MY" KINDA TUNE-UP IF YOU WISH, PRETTY MUCH THE OLDER RIGS, TUNE VERY SIMILAR, YOU'D JUST HAVE TO TRANSLATE MY JEEP PICS INTO PONTIAC REALITY

I did the test like you told me and it was hot at all times and then I pulled the distributor and made the gasket cause I knew it didn't come with it but I hadn't thought it would affect anything cause on the old one it must have burned it all the way up thanks for all your help man I appreciate it
