Will not go into park

Hello, my SUV will not go into park. I have to start the engine in neutral. Is it still drive-able? What precautions should I know?

Put on hand brake and chock the wheels, get under car and remove the selector cable from the selector, move the selector by hand to the park position, if it moves and clicks in, the problem will be with the shifter or the cable, check this first.
