What is this and could it be the cause of the knocking sound

Just started hearing knocking from rear passenger tire, cannot really see anything except this which appears to be looser than it should be. So just wondering exactly what that is, and if it is causing the knocking? Also, smell tiny bit of burnt rubber smell almost.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

What I believe you circled is the backing plate behind the brake rotor. Take a look at the attached picture. It shows behind the tire and wheel. You can see the brake rotor and behind it is the backing plate.

Is that the component you are referring to? If so, I don't see how it would cause a knocking. I have seen them bent or rusted and rubbing the rotor causing a squealing.

Let me know if that's it and when you hear the knocking.
