I hear a sound that I am not sure if it is a timing chain slap or something else. No check engine light. Started as soon as my mom pulled up on our drive way.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

It could be several different things. Is it possible for you to record the sound and upload it so I can hear it?

Let me know.

Welcome back:

Listening to your videos, it sounds like top end noise from the engine and not a timing chain. Is the oil level full? Was it ever overheated?

Take a look through this link and see if anything seems to mirror what you are experiencing.

Let me know.

It never overheated and the oil is good. Should I change the oil see if it helps? It looks dirty it but I still have a couple miles left. The weird thing is I don't have any codes and the serpentine belt seems tight. I did have VW change the alternator pulley two months ago.

Welcome back:

What I would suggest at this point is to remove the accessory drive belt that runs the alternator, A/C and so on. Start the engine for only a couple seconds to see if the noise is gone. If it is, inspect all belt driven accessories to see if there is any indicate a bearing problem.

Here are the directions for removing and installing the belt. The attached pictures correlate with the directions.

Ribbed Belt

Removing

Risk of destroying due to a reversed running direction of a used ribbed belt.

Before removing the ribbed belt, mark the running direction with chalk or a felt-tip pen for reinstallation later.

- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to one of the following:

GTI and Tiguan

Eos and Passat

CC,

- Remove the right charge air hose - arrows -.

Pic 1

- To release the tension on the ribbed belt, turn the tensioner in the - direction of the arrow - from underneath.

Pic 2

- Secure the tensioner using the locking tool (T10060 A).

- Remove the ribbed belt.

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Before installing the ribbed belt, the generator and Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor must be installed securely.

- First, install the ribbed belt on the vibration damper, then on the A/C compressor and generator.

Pic 3

- Turn the tensioner using a box end wrench and remove the locking pin (T10060 A).

Pic 4

- Release the tensioner.

- Check whether ribbed belt is routed correctly.

- Start the engine and check whether the ribbed belt runs correctly.

The last picture I attached is an exploded view of the drive belt assembly.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Welcome back:

Okay, then we can eliminate anything related to the drive belt. Next, we need to narrow down where the sound is from, the top of the engine or bottom. I suspect the top. Confirm where and let me know. We may have to remove the valve cover and inspect the cam as well as the timing chain. You should install the serpentine belt if you for any more tests with the engine running.

Let me know.
