M46 only: Disconnect the overdrive connector. Remove the panel on the right-hand side of the centre console. Disconnect the connector. Remove the pin from the connector. Fit a 0.5 m (1.6 ft) long piece of wire.
Remove the gear lever. Remove the leather boot, if any. Press down the rubber boot until the tubular pin is exposed. Press out the pin. Pull the lever carefully upwards. M46 only: Feed the wire through. Remove the wire from the cable.

Remove the gear lever knob. M46 only: Remove the overdrive switch. Grip the lever in a vice with soft jaws. Use an open-ended wrench to tap oft the knob.

Remove the reverse detent mechanism. Steel pull rod: Back off the screw for the reverse detent ring. Remove the ring. Withdraw the pull rod, spring and detent sleeve.

Plastic pull rod: Press in the cleat (1) and remove the detent sleeve and spring.
M46: Raise the reverse detent ring slightly. Release the ring from the pull rod (2). Withdraw the pull rod downwards.
M47: Lift up the reverse detent ring and pull rod as a unit. Dismantle the parts.

Fit the reverse detent mechanism. Check that the rubber bushes and cables for the overdrive (M46) are in position. M46: Insert the pull rod from the underside. Connect it to the reverse detent ring. M47: Assemble the pull rod and reverse detent ring. Insert the pull rod from above. NOTE : The lower clinch cleat of the pull rod must face outwards. Ensure that the pull rod is in the correct position on the inside of the lock cleat on the reverse detent ring.
Fit the spring and the reverse detent. Press the cleat on the pull rod securely into the hole.

Fit the gear lever knob. Remove any old adhesive remaining on the lever and in the knob. Apply a bead of thread sealing compound P/N 1161 075-5. Press the knob into place. Remove any excess compound.

Fit the gear lever. M46: Secure the wire used earlier to the overdrive cables. Apply a small amount of rubber bush compound P/N 1161153-0 to the bottom end of the gear lever. Assemble the two parts of the gear lever. M46: Thread through the overdrive cable at the same time. Don't stretch the cable too tight. Fit the tubular pin.
M46: Assemble the electrical components for operating the overdrive. Assemble:
the pin in the connector on the right-hand side
the connector
the overdrive switch
Check the operation of the overdrive. Fit the ashtray.

Check the operation of the reverse detent. If the yoke is correctly adjusted, the play at the gear lever knob in positions 1 and 2 will be 5-20 mm (0.2-0.8 in). If there is no play or if it is difficult to engage 1st and 2nd gear, the yoke must be adjusted. Raise the boot, engage 1st gear and adjust the clearance between the yoke and the detent sleeve. The correct clearance is 0.5-1.5 mm (0.0197-0.059 in). Also check the clearance in 2nd gear position. Refit the boot.
