No reverse in my manual 96 VW Passat glx vr6

My reverse was working fine and then I wake up this morning to go to work and I started it up and then put it in reverse and it was in first gear, so I tried for a while to get it into reverse, nothing. I know im putting it into where reverse is jus it wont back up, can anyone tell me what it could be.

Check to see if there is a vacuum actuator to put th e gearbox into reverse. Had a similar problem where it wouild go into 5th and rev, but no move.

What was happening is that the vacuum hose itself was old, and getting soft, and collapsing under the vacuum. When the engine was warm, it shifted normally, but within minutes, the hose would be soft enought to collapse and the actuator could not operate properly.

Took me forever to figure out, but all it was is replace the vacuum hose to the actuator on the transmission.
