1969 VW bug

I have a dilemna. My 69 has been sitting for a little while and I decided to go fire it up. It starts but it wont stay started, (idle), the only way it actually does is if I pump the gas pedal which cause it to over rev?Please help

You say the car sat for a while, check the gas to see if you can smell a varnish smell coming from it. Gas goes bad after amount of time and starts to varnish. Try carborator cleaner on the carb. Add fuel system cleaner in with the new gas.
