2002 Volkswagen Jetta Test Mode?

Hello I have a friend with a 02 VW Jetta. The door light and engine light are always on. As well athe high temp light ( intermitten). I was wondering if there was a self test mode like the 1998+ Ford models have where you can turn on the lights, hold the brake down, hold the spedo reset button down and turn the engine over and it will go into a test mode on the dash. Basically I want to know if there is a way to get to the codes without a scanner.
