I have a 1999 VW Jetta. I'm told the car burns oil. It's been misfiring when idealing for about two years but it's been drivable.

I replaced the coil and wires about 3 months ago hoping to solve the problem. This is the third coil on the car. Replacing that helped a little bit when it rained out but it was still misfiring consistently. I only drive about 2 miles to work and don't log a lot of miles on the car.

Recently it just crapped out. The car starts but shakes when in any gear and has almost no power and is basically undrivable. The plugs appear to be ok and are dry. The timing belt was replaced about 50K-60K miles ago and looks ok.

What could be causing this problem.

Engine running rough or misfiring can be cause by the following:

1. Defective spark plug
2. Inadequate spark/coil, defective spark plug wire.
3. Lack of compression
4. False air leakage.
5. Faulty fuel injectors.
6. Insufficient fuel pressure.
7. Contaminated fuel.
8. EGR valve that is leaking.
9. Oxygen sensors.
10. Throttle position sensor.
11. Idle air control valve.
