I have a 99 vw Jetta 2.0 L and I was at the grocery store and when I came out I didn't have Reverse, First, 4th, or 5th gear.

Check the cable connections to the trans, one or both may have come loose. There is usually a select and shift cable, if the retainers break, you will not be able to shift. Also make sure the brackets are tight. If OK, then check the shifter linkage in the cabin for loose connections.

If they are loose, a possible cause is a bad motor mount.
