Where is the thermostat located on a 1990 VW jetta 1.8L? I was told its hard to get at is this true?

The thermostat housing is located on the bottom of the water pump unit. However, on some models the thermostat is in the bottom of the water pump housing. Very difficult to get to on this vehicle.
