2002 Volkswagen Cabriolet check engine light

When I fill my tank up the check engine light comes on. When the tank gets to less then half full the light goes off; this happened once. Other times it stays on. I check the cap and its on tight. Could it be the type of gas? The car runs fine. Is this serious?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
