Why does the electric power steering trip out? Is it sensors on the steering column, or is it the alternator, or the ECU, and why don't vauxhall have a clue? Don't they know how to build a decent shed?

this is a common fault on the meriva .. I think due to bad sensors .. it could be due to the alternator not putting out enough power .. vauxhall will eventually find and rectify the fault !
