I'm about to replace the engine in my truck with a used, salvaged engine that has 96,000 miles on it. Considering the mileage, what parts/gaskets/seals would you recommend replacing prior to installation while the engine is still out of the vehicle and easier to work on? Timing chain, front engine cover gasket, water pump, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gasket, etc?

Hi,

The only thing I would do is check for any oil leaks and replace gaskets as needed. If the engine was properly maintained and not abused, then I would leave the timing alone. If the oil was neglected or if the engine was abused, then I would replace the timing components.

I attached the directions below for replacing the timing chain. Take a look at the directions and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Let me know if this helps or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

Aside from checking the color/condition of the motor oil, what would be the best way to determine how well the engine had been maintained or if it had been abused?

As far as checking, if oil wasn't replaced on a regular basis, often times you will see sludge in the engine. If you remove the oil fill cap, look down into the valve cover to see if it appears clean.

Also, if you are replacing the timing chain, the timing chain cover will indicate a lack of maintenance the same as through the valve cover.

As far as abuse goes, that is a tough one. You usually won't see visual evidence. You would need to do things such as check engine compression. However, if there are aftermarket performance parts on the engine, that could indicate it was run hard. So, I guess you indirectly could see things.

Let me know what I can do to help.
