Transmission will not engage

Okay, I rebuilt engine and put another trans in it 4l60e same as old but when I put in gear it drags engine down but won't move and if I pull fuse you can hear Ang feel in engage. Tries to go but won't. I'm at a loss. pump working and new shift solenoids.

What is the history of this transmission? Was it also rebuilt? Or is it used and you don't know the history?

Don't know, it was given to me. he said it was good. But you know how that goes. filter was pretty bad so replaced that too. so not sure.

Was the fluid brown or red? Was there any metal shavings in the pan or on the magnet?

Can you unbolt the converter from the flywheel and spin it? See if it spins free or drags.

Yes real fine sludge on magnet replaced fluid smelt burnt. I believe torque converter will spin easy but I'll try it. you thinking TC? I did the dipstick pump test fluid goes down when running.

And yes before I replaced fluid it was a kinda dull purplish color.

I am thinking the pump is smoked. When you spin it, it should keep spinning and slowly come to a stop. If it stops quickly the pump is likely damaged.

There is also a pressure regulator valve in the pump. If that sticks shut the pressure load will slow the motor also.
