2004 Toyota Sienna lift gate struts

How do I replace the lift gate struts. I bought the replacement part and removed the old struts. But the new struts is "spring" loaded (actually gas) and as such is longer. How do I make it retract so I can install it?

Good new for you. Toyota will repair the lift gate problem under warranty up to six years.
