I have a dead alternator and want to charge the battery, so that I can get my car to the garage. I have a portable car battery charger that willstart the car. If I want to charge the battery should I hook it up to the car battery and not start the engine? Since the alternator is shot does it make any sense to start the car?
Will I get a better charge from another car and if so will I be better off with the other car running or just battery to battery connect and neither car running.

please help I am not terribly savvy with this subject.

Thanks.

Check with local autoparts stores about charging your battery for free.

Do not run engine very long with a bad alternator, if battery gets to low, it will have to be replaced.

Also do not use another car to start or run engine, you could damage the battery/alt. Of the other car.
