I am getting lots of front end noises when going over somewhat bumpy streets--on both sides .
I am told I should replace the McPherson struts, and want to know if both front and back usually would both be replaced, whether many mechanic hours are normally required, or if McPherson repair is much like the old shock absorber replacements. For a metropolitan area (No. Va in the greater Wash DC area) would replacement costs reasonably likely be under or over $1000.00?

Independent shops usually have lower labor rates. It will take 4 hours of labor plus the cost of part, including shop markups. If they let you purchase the parts yourself, you will save a decent amount.

Price depends on locality. Metropolitan usually has higher rate. You need to shop around for the most competitive labor rate, and if you can purchase the parts yourself.

I would imagine that the whole total would be less than $1000.
