1994 Toyota 4Runner timing

Engine Performance problem
1994 Toyota 4Runner 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 138k miles

I know the book says set the timing at 10 degrees at 800 RPM but if I det mine there it just kills it, it will barely pull itself. Everything is mechanically sound including a new O2 sensor
So what is the deal on the timing
