Timing cover gasket leak

Two years ago, I had to have the timing chain replaced by the dealership due to codes during emissions testing. Not covered under warranty and very expensive. I have had several issues with leaks ever since. Most recently, it has been discovered that my timing cover gasket needs to be replaced due to oil leak. Very expensive. I am thinking there is a correlation between the timing chain repair and the timing cover gasket leaking due to an installation mistake. Am I on the right track and is there any chance of the dealership helping me out with this issue?

Hi Robinannette,

It is possible but it is unlikely that they would cover the repair completely for you just due to the amount of time that has past. However, the things that could happen are if they did not torque the bolts properly, they did not seal it properly with the RTV sealant. Basically, this is a silicone sealant that they apply to the cover and if they missed a section it could leak. Again, this is more likely to leak pretty quickly after the repair so because it has been two years they would not likely cover it. Plus, I doubt a workmanship issue would last two years.

If they want to keep your business because you have spent so much money with them, they may discount it for you. If they don't, I would raise that point, that you spent that amount of money with them and they should help you out.

Please let me know if you have further questions. Thanks
