A couple of months ago the check engine light came on and the code was for the thermostat. It was not over heating. The heater did not work, but no big deal for Austin. Gas mileage is down one or two mpg, but no big deal since I get 28 to 30 mpg and don't drive a lot of miles. So I wonder if it is really necessary to replace it since it must be stuck open and not closed? Will running the air conditoner cause any problem is not replaced?

The thermostat may be bad due to your heater not working well and the engine may not be coming up to correct temperature. The thermostat should be replaced.
