Coolent temperature sensor sometimes work and sometimes it shows code p0116.

I would remove the electrical connector at the engine coolant sensor to check the connection for corrosion or a wiring problem, if it looks okay replace the sensor, here is the location so you can check it out.
The P0116 code is related to the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor performance.
