Hi guys.
i have a 96 suzuki vitara LX 1.6 with 76000 miles on the clock.
I was sitting at a drive through and when I wound my window down smelt a nasty smell a bit like heated metal.
On moving off I noticed a faint clicking sound when accelorating in 5th. This got progresivly louder and after 2 miles was now making the sound whenever I touched the accelerator and now sounded like a ballbearing popping round at high speed in the engine.
I nursed her the next two miles home and upon parking noticed smoke coming from the hood.
I opened up and saw smoke rising form 2 vents/holes in the top of the section just behind the radiator and about 6-8 inchs above where the spark plug leads go in.
running my hands over the area, the radiator area was fine but the area behind it was giving off alot of heat and the smell was fairly strong.
also while stationary the revs went up and down from 1500 to 1900 taking about 2 seconds to do so.
switched her off and came to talk to you guys.

firstly, sorry for my decriptions, this is my first car and im still learning the names of things in my engine. I think the area I talk about might be the manafold, but im not sure.

if anyone can offer a diagnoses I would be gratfull and if you could tell me if its ok or unwise to drive it to my local garage half a mile away.

thanks and please break bad news gently?

Ok update
went out this morning when it was light. The raideator was completly dry. Also the vents/holes I talk about were infact the 2 bolts holding down the metal covering. Coolant was at a normal lvl and I remember looking at my temp gauge when seeing the smoke and it was a little below normal.
Did I overheat.I was a hot day.
Thx
