Brakes problem
2001 Subaru Outback Automatic 157000 miles

My ex-girlfriend and I still share the car we owned together. She recently got the brakes overhauled without running the cost past me. She paid $1275 to get the pads, rotors and calipers replaced. The questions are

A) Was she overcharged? I would have expected something closer to $700, but that could be outdated. We live in NYC, BTW but the repair was done in Amherst, MA

B) Is that more than the car was worth?

Thanks!

Hi there, thank you for the donation,

Was this work done to there front or rear or both, and I would be questioning why the calipers were replaced as they very rarely need replacing especially on a car the age of yours, can you get some more information please.

It was done on both. Apparently the mechanic showed her the calipers and they were "rusted out." I'm not sure what that means exactly, but maybe you do?

Calipers don't normally rust out, only those that get salt water on them and are not cleaned down can rust up and bind pistons, but at worst they leak and you re kit them, but with out seeing them I can only speculate on this, as for the price, looking at Mitchell 1 the calipers would cost about $1800 using genuine parts, so that price is around what you would expect for non genuine, my concern is that the calipers may have been replaced for no good reason.
