My cv boots are split - what is the cheapest thing I can do to resolve it vice do nothing - how long can I go without repairing it myself or taking it to a repair shop or dealership?

Maybe a few hundred miles. Since the cv joint is gone the joint will rust up and break and make a lot of noise. Damage the transmission and wheel bearing possibly or just fail out and you wont be going anywhere.

Cheapest thing to do is replace the boot if your doing it yourself, just make sure the join isnt ruind. If your having someone do it for you I suggest eplacing thewhole axle. Its not thatmuch more expensive then a boot. And its a hell of alot cheaper for labor

If replacing the entire axle, use caution with using anything other than a new Subaru axle. Driviability issues have been known to occur with the use of an aftermarket axle.
