Our Subaru Outback, with all wheel drive and 128,000 miles, tugs or jerks when you are at low speeds, especially when turning into a parking space. You keep a constant pressure on the gas and it is like the transmission is slipping almost. A garage said they put it on the rack, one tire on each side was spinning like it should, but on the rear one wheel was able to be spun backward freely. After they did some more poking, they say the rear differential is shot. I trust them, but with a $2000 repair I just like to be sure that is what it is.

That does not sound right to me at all. Get a second opinion. On the rear diff when you spin one wheel one way the other wheel should spin the opposite way if the wheels are off the ground. Get another opinion. Get another opinion. Let us know
