I bought a 1995 Legacy with 136,000 and the clutch went out at 141,000. How long should it take me to do the job myself (with my mechanically inclined but ornary dad helping), and how many hours can I expect a mechanic to charge me for (cluth, pressure plate, throwout bearing). Does the job require droppping the engine or transmission? Which do you prefer? Thanks.

The tranny has to come out. I suspect a clutch set-up is about $225. If it is a 4wd don't even think about doing it.

It is a tough job because the axles have to come out, drop the tranny. With 136K the flywheel needs turning.

If you have about 12 hours then I think you can get the job done that is if you have replaced a Subaru clutch at least 5 times.

If not almost impossible for a novice to do. Good luck

I am a novice and I removed and installed an AWD legacy tramission in about 12 hours the first time. It was one of the easiset cars I have worked on. If you take your time it will go very well. There were no speccial tools except some jackstands and a floor jack that I used.
