I have 98 legacy outback 2.5 the automatic trans. Went out we replaced it but its jerky in AWD like the gear ratio is different from the front to rear.I don't know for sure what the new trans. Came from. It was a junkyard item. What I would like to know is could there be that many gear ratios or could it be an internal problem with the new/used trans? I already tried a different rear end. Right now I'm driving it with the AWD locked out.

It might not be the transmission, Have the electrical system checked out. Could be the transmission control module

Most likely the replacement trans has a transfer clutch or transfer silinoid issue issue. BUT Note that these trans are not all interchangable as they may require a different TCM depending on the application. If the power light is not flashing I would suggest that the situation may be addressed with a trans flush and an additive to free up the transfer clutches.
