I have a 1991 Subaru Legacy Wagon AWD that seems to bind up in 4wd when making turns at low speed. This is accompanied by vibrations, chattering and lurching of the vehicle similar to other 4wd vehicles when on dry pavement. How does this AWD operate? Is this problem a function of a front/rear differential? I have been told both that this is part time 4wd that engages when the front wheels slip and also that is full time 4wd. I would like to know how this AWD functions and how this problem can be cured. Thanks in advance. :

If your Legacy is labeled AWD then it is full time 4wd. If your still unsure jack one side of car when spin the sront wheel back wheel will also turn as far as the noise you are hearing that is a complainted I have heard from several legacy owners but only in the ones with automatic transmission seems to be more common in the ones that are not driven a great deal I was told it was the clutches sticking that cause this problem

I'm having the same problem with my 91 automatic. I put lucus trans treatment in it 800 miles ago with no difference. My mechanic says I'll need a new trans if it doesnt free itself.
