2005 Subaru Forester, 18,000 miles, Manual Transmission

I parked my Subaru in my driveway on a slight incline. I - think - I parked it in neutral with the handbrake on.

When I tried to drive it later that day it started fine and the hand brake released but the gear shift lever would not move no matter how much I tried nor would the car move, i.E. It wouldn't roll back down the incline.

I tried pushing the car backward and forwards but it would'nt budge.

Hmm. Car running, clutch in, the shifter wont move. Sounds like something in the trans or shifter assembly broke. Ive had both things cause this problem. Try gaining access to the shifter and see if there is anything physically broken. Other than that it may have to go to a trans shop

This could result from a linkage problem, such as damage shift mecanism, interference between the floor shift handle and the console or floor cutout, restricted travelt of the shift linkage,
problem may also caused by damage to the first gear or the synchronizer for that gear.

This is Nick, I'm the one who posted the problem and wanted to inform any interested party what the final solution was.

It was the hill holder mechanism. It was set to too tight and when I parked that day on a slight incline I had the luck to lock the mechanism. The fix was to loosen the hill holder.

This bottom line for this minor adjustment? One tow @ $245 and a repair @ $28.

Fortunately, the repair and tow were covered by warranty - thank you Subaru.
